Painted during my 2018 residency in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, located on the Bay of Naples and across from Mt. Vesuvius. I thought a lot about Pliny the Elder sailing into Pompeii to rescue people from the eruption, a mission that ultimately cost him his life.
